Technology has become an essential part of modern life, influencing how people communicate, learn, work, access services, conduct business, and participate in society. Smartphones, computers, connected devices, digital infrastructure, and software platforms provide capabilities that were difficult to imagine only a few decades ago. Yet the expansion of technological access has also created a less visible challenge: society is becoming increasingly dependent on products and systems whose useful life, repairability, and continued operation may be determined by decisions that users do not fully understand or control. A device can remain physically functional while becoming difficult to use because of discontinued software support, unavailable replacement parts, incompatible applications, or restricted access to repairs.

Technology and society are no longer separate forces developing alongside one another. They form an increasingly interconnected system in which technological innovation changes how people live, work, communicate, learn, produce, and organize their communities, while social needs, expectations, creativity, and collective decisions influence the direction of technological development. This relationship has become one of the most significant forces shaping the contemporary world.

Technological advancement is transforming the global economy and changing how societies communicate, produce, learn, provide services, manage resources, and interact with institutions. Artificial intelligence, automation, biotechnology, advanced computing, robotics, satellite systems, digital platforms, and increasingly connected infrastructure are expanding human capabilities at a remarkable pace. These developments create opportunities for productivity, scientific discovery, economic development, healthcare, education, environmental management, and social connectivity, while simultaneously introducing new policy challenges.

Technological progress is changing the way societies communicate, work, learn, produce, travel, govern, create, and make decisions. Artificial intelligence, advanced computing, biotechnology, robotics, automation, digital platforms, connected devices, satellite systems, and increasingly sophisticated data networks are expanding human capabilities at a pace that can be difficult for institutions and communities to absorb. The benefits are substantial, but the speed of transformation is creating challenges that require society to think beyond the technology itself.

Philanthropy is becoming a powerful driver of technological innovation by supporting scientific research, digital inclusion, responsible artificial intelligence, and accessible technology. Through long-term investment and cross-sector collaboration, philanthropy helps ensure that technological progress creates lasting benefits for society.

Digital inclusion is becoming a cornerstone of modern societies. By expanding internet access, improving digital literacy, and designing accessible technologies, governments and organizations are helping ensure that technological progress creates opportunities for everyone.
